If you've never acquired a mailing list you may not have thought of it, but mailing lists are almost always rented and not purchased. What you're paying for is the right to mail to a list for a specified number of times. Rental lists are available for either one-time, multiple or unlimited use. One-time use means you can mail to each record only once. If you purchase a multiple use list, you indicate prior to purchase how many times you intend to use the list. Unlimited use means you can mail to each record an unlimited number of times during the time period established in your mailing list rental terms and agreements, typically a year.
List owners monitor list usage by adding seed names. The seed names will notify a list owner when they receive mail. This allows the list owner to ensure that no one copies the list or uses it without paying for it.
